Speculators actually make markets more efficient by moving pricing to balance with supply and demand faster - but the politicians need to find a source to blame, and you can be sure it'll be something in the free market.

The answer is, of course, that government officials do not believe in the free market. Most of them that pay lip service to it don't understand how free markets work, and they have a deeply held belief that governments precede free markets, that markets don't work without their all-knowing central planning to guide them.

Watch for more regulation over speculating in the next year. They'll find a free market institution to blame, then will justify more government intervention and regulation to "fix" it. More government power over trade, again.
