I would highly recommend reading Beyond Fear by Bruce Schneier to further understand why the Patriot Act is a bad thing. He has long worked in the world of information security starting with encryption algorithms and has developed a strong understanding of security. His primary theme is security is a always a trade-off, possibly more protection for more hassle / less freedom. He has some interesting insights about how people have different perspectives on security and how they use their agenda's to set policy. He discusses a concept of "security theatre", which where people want to make it seem like they are doing something valuable but actually making a bad trade-off.
